Many of us are breathing new air and relieved that democracy still works in America and the real threat of autocracy has likely been blunted with last night’s election results.
HOWEVER, we’re seeing many triumphant memes that “woke is back” and similar after last night’s refreshing election results. We don’t think that is the signal that most swing voters supporting the midterm blue wave are sending. They want inflation and prices to come down, less brutal and indiscriminate deportation tactics, the war in Iran and unquestioning support for Israel to end, shameless graft and corruption in government to at least return to merely “disappointing” levels, and a return to civility. Mainly, such voters likely are simply signaling that the policies of Trump 2.0 aren’t working for them.
While we are as relieved as anyone by the midterm election results, we fear that claims to a “mandate” to return to prior levels of “wokeness” and strongly progressive agendas around culture war issues are mistaken and encourage exactly the kind of 180 degree political whiplash that the country cannot continue under.
Democrats: focus on good governance, a return to civility, and most of all pocketbook issues and disentangling us from pointless foreign wars of choice. Advance social support mechanisms that work, including fixing the looming Social Security crisis. Get Obamacare back on track. You get the idea.
